ProPeru Semester Courses & Credits

As a Semester in Peru student, you will recieve 12-16 U.S. credits from Jacksonville University by taking courses at one of two Peruvian Universities depending on your Spanish language capabilities and interests.

Centro Bartolome de las Casas:  Intermediate to advanced Spanish speakers may choose to study at this highly respected Andean studies institution.  All courses are taught in Spanish only and are designed for students learning Spanish as a foreign language.  A minimum of one year of university level spanish is required. 

Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola:  Beginning spanish speakers, students who have never studied spanish, or students who prefer to take courses in English can study at this satellite campus of a major Peruvian university.  Courses are taught in English and additionally students will take one Spanish language course tailored to their ability (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

Jacksonville University accredits the program and provides transcripts upon successful completion.  The curriculum at each institution is described below.

6 CREDITS

This course begins with a thorough written and oral Spanish evaluation, placing each student with other students of his or her level.

This course includes conversation, reading, and discussion of texts. Small classes emphasize enrichment of vocabulary for daily conversational needs as well as more traditional instruction concentrating on grammatical structures.

SPECIAL ISSUES IN DEVELOPMENT WORK (Taught in Spanish)

4 CREDITS

This course encompasses both the theoretical and practical study of development programs and projects in Peru.

After an introduction to development theory, students work on a focused semester development project. This hands-on experience serves as the basis for investigation of cultural, economic, and social impacts of international and domestic development initiatives in Peru.

ART AND HISTORY OF PERU (Taught in Spanish)

3 CREDITS

This interdisciplinary course offers students a greater understanding of Peruvian culture through a varied exploration of Peru's art history.

Class discussions and readings are complemented by field trips to Incan Ruins, Spanish Cathedrals, and museums. Students will also have a chance to visit local arts and crafts workshops to understand the current artistic activity in Peru.

HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICAN POLITICS (Taught in Spanish)

3 CREDITS

The course explores the nature and evolution of politics in the region, with a general emphasis on Peru.

The focus of this course includes such topics as democratization, political culture, civil-military relations, civil society, economic development, and hemispheric economic integration. The class will also look at Latin America's role in the world in the 21st Century.

Spanish Language

BIODIVERSITY OF PERU

3 CREDITS

This course explores the rich biodiversity of Peru and the varied landscapes and climates that make this diversity possible.  Course will later exlpore conservation methods and issues. 

HISTORY OF THE INCAN CIVILIZATION

3 CREDITS

This course provides a basic survey of the prehistory of civilizations in the Central Andean Region. Topics include the history of Andean archaeology, peopling of the continent, origins and evolution of agriculture, early village life, ceremonial and domestic architecture, prehistoric art and symbolism, Andean cosmology and astronomy, indigenous technology, the historical ecology of landscapes, interregional contacts and relationships, economics and trade, social and political structure, state formation and urbanism, and early contacts with Europeans. It will be focused on the recent archaeological investigations and interpretations combined with appropriate analogies from ethno historical and ethnographical information.

CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AND CULTURE OF PERU

3 CREDITS

This course will explore the series of historical transformations undergone by Peruvian society and enriched by Andean, Occidental, African and Amazonian traditions. These transformations will be addressed from a historical, anthropological, and sociological perspective.

LITERATURA LATINOAMERICANA(in Spanish for advanced speakers)

3 CREDITS 

El presente curso es teórico-práctico y se orienta a desarrollar en el alumno la habilidad de leer críticamente y valorar textos de la literatura latinoamericana a través del análisis riguroso de la poesía, el cuento y la novela en relación con la cultura de su país y su relevancia en el ámbito internacional. La estructura temática de esta asignatura está constituida por el estudio del boom latinoamericano, el cuento de los años 50 y la poesía latinoamericana de vanguardia.
