ProGhana Semester Overview

ProGhana and Jacksonville University share in a vision of empowering university students to make valuable contributions in Ghana through the study abroad volunteer program. The Semester in Ghana enhances students’ global perspectives through a blend of academic coursework, field studies, and hands-on development project experience.

ProGhana students take courses at the prestigious University of Cape Coast. The university offers a wide-range of degree programs and is one of the most reputable institutions of higher education in all of West Africa. All courses are taught by local Ghanaian faculty with expertise in the specified area. Students will take classes in African Studies and may also choose electives from the various range of courses offered at the university.

In addition to academic coursework, students will participate in service learning projects in Cape Coast throughout their semester. Project work may include helping to construct local schools, participating in health outreach, educational enrichment activities at local elementary schools, and assisting small business efforts.

To further the experience, students will live with local homestay families and participate in cultural excursions and workshops throughout the semester.

The Program Includes:

Intensive group orientation
12 - 16 Academic Credits, Tuition Fees, & Transcripts from JU
Academic classes four to five days a week
Airport pick up in Cape Coast
Full room and board with a local family
Four to six group development project outings
$400 US per student of development project funding
Cultural and adventure excursions
24 hour emergency contact on site
Regular staff check ins and access to ProGhana office in Cape Coast

Program fees do not include: international airfare, passport fees, visa fees, insurance, independent travel during the program, or personal expenses. Program fees may change without notice due to currency exchanges and the unique nature of international travel.
