Jo Hall- Field Placement ProBelize
I was assigned a Women’s development project; researching and creating opportunities for women in the tourism sector.
I was able to research the local tourism industry, its history, trends, and outlooks. I then spoke to a number of community partners, notably a representative from the Department of Human Development and some local women’s groups.
I then planned a research-based comprehensive tourism training program aimed at empowering women to take on higher-level positions within the tourism industry. The program outline includes committed participants, facilitators, and local venues.
I was also able to seek funding for the program outlined. I worked alongside experienced grant writers to formulate a concept letter; and draft applications to a range of potential funders.
I spent time researching similar projects in Belize and elsewhere, considering possible sources of funding, and how to best present the program to funders. I feel that during my time in Belize I was able to make a real difference to the local community; this is something I will never forget.
