Arnab Banerjee, ProPeru NGO Intern

I worked on the Chicon eco-tourism project. This was probably the most interesting and satisfying job I ever had, and it was based in one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited!

I worked with two other volunteers and our job was to work with a group of young people in Chicon to help set up an eco-tourism project in the Chicon Valley. The aim of the project was to stop the people of Chicon destroying local forests and to encourage them to look after them instead by providing them with an alternative source of income utilizing the forests.

Our job involved teaching English, computing, basic management skills, finance, helping to clear the tracks (which meant macheteeing our way through forests!), creating a website and designing leaflets. The work was extremely varied and really rewarding as you could see your work make a real difference.

"The lack of money has always kept me from doing things that I may have wanted to do, but since Study Abroad at my school is required for a language major I fundraised and found grants that I could get through the school. Now I am just so extremely beyond happy that ProPeru did not become another one of my lost wishes." – Tiffany
