Amanda Diegel, ProPeru Fall Semester Student

This is the first time I’ve ever left the United States and it is amazing. Peru is very interesting and so full of history and culture. It has such an amazing past and yet a modern feel too.

The culture is so distinct and the landscape is beautiful. I love waking up and looking at mountains every morning.

I’ve been here a week and I’ve seen some improvement in my Spanish speaking and a huge improvement in my understanding. Living with a host family really immerses me in the language.

I love my homestay family. My two host brothers, who are eleven and thirteen, are so patient and understanding. They are eager to learn about where I come from and help me understand where they come from.

The excursion to Moray and Salineras was great. I was just baffled by the history of the sites.

The Incas were testing agricultural practices at Moray hundreds of years before the West even had the technology. The salt pools at Salineras were simple and yet so efficient and have been in use for so long.

“My experience in the Sacred Valley was absolutely incredible. From a host family that incorporated me as one of their own, to the community of Chichubamba I worked for that provided deep insights into the contemporary problems that families face in the Andes." - Matt
