Wanted: Migrant Rights and Services Intern
Organization: Confidential
Location: Oaxaca, Mexico
Duration: Minimum 1 month
Duties: ProMexico's partner organization is one of the only organizations in Oaxaca City that works with migrants from Central America passing through Oaxaca on their way "North" in search of a better life.  Central Americans must migrate through Mexico to reach the US.  They fall victim to many abuses on that journey, before even reaching the US/Mexican border.  They are especially vulnerable when they are in transit through the southern part of Mexico in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Oaaca, and Veracruz.  They are frequently stopped and depoted by Mexcan immigration agents or other Mexican authorities.  Extortion and abuse by authorities is common.  They are also preyed upon by thieves, gangs, and networks of organized criminals.  6 out of 10 migrants reported some type of abuse occurring in Chiapas or Oaxaca, Mexico.  The abuse includes assault, extortion, rape, mutilation and kidnappings.

This organization provides shelter and meals, as well as a safe place for the migrant's journey.  They also include a mandatory orientation that covers the risks of being a migrant, their basic human rights, and their obligations.  They also help local Oaxacan families try to find information on loved ones who have disappeared during their journey to the North.  In addition, the organization is available to give workshops and lectures on migration and related topics.
